{Day 4 & 5} 10 Days of Giving…shop!

Good Morning everyone!!  Laura C. won the Target gift card!!  Day 6 coming soon:)

I’m so sorry everyone for not doing yesterday, I’m hoping today will make up for it!  Today I’m happy to give a $50 gift card to Target!!  Please comment all day on this post and all entries will be put into random.org for the giveaway.  The cutoff is midnight EST tonight!

When you comment, tell me one of your favorite holiday traditions.  I was reminded of something by our girls (I didn’t even realize it had become a tradition).  Every Christmas morning I make cinnamon rolls and we have them after opening gifts.  My oldest daughter asked the other day if I was making yummy rolls for Christmas breakfast and I had no idea what she was talking about, then she explained and it made me smile knowing this had become a fun tradition for us.  Another tradition for us is that we ALWAYS do a Gingerbread house, village or train.  This year we are doing both a house and tree, can’t wait to do it with them!

Enjoy today everyone…

Here is what was the best tradition we had growing up: waking up and gathering in the living room, with my dad wearing a big comfy robe and everyone still in their PJ’s, and opening up our stockings first, while my childhood dog (the best dog ever) would sit in the middle of all the excitement and joy and torn paper and get all covered up and just be so happy to have all that attention, and to have everyone in the same place around her. It was so sweet. This will be our first Christmas without her, as she passed away a few weeks ago, and I know it will be hard to feel her absence. But so great she got to spend so many Christmases with us.

My favorite holiday tradition is having family over for Christmas Eve dinner at my house and then we go to my sister’s house Christmas morning to open gifts. I love when everyone can get together and just enjoy this time of year!

Since I was raised in St.Lucia, our Christmas tradition encompassed, praying, singing, eating and partying with friends and family. My favorite memory was Christmas eve, when my mom would bake what we call Black Cake (a fruit cake made with dried fruits which were soaked for months in Port and rum). The aroma from the cakes in the oven, the smell of the country ham baking while we play Christmas carols and sing along are the memories which I will miss this year as we are beginning new traditions with our American kids right here. I hope some day, our girls will be able to talk about our traditions with a tear in the eyes like I am.

One of my favorite traditions from my childhood that I’ve passed on is making monkey bread and breakfast casserole Christmas morning. A new tradition we started this year is opening a Christmas book each week to read and learn about this time of year!

when I go visit my family in Oklahoma, we have two traditions–1. we eat chili on Christmas Eve. 2. we have twelve days of christmas ornaments and sing the song as we put them on the tree–but instead of saying the actual lyrics we make up something silly for each of the numbers.

one year it was (I had this written up already!) twelve turkish towels, eleven random gifts from aunt gayla, ten bowls of chili,
a new female kitten, an infinity sign sideways, final fantasy seven, six pieces of chicken, five hoegaarden beers, a noogie from adam, a salt shaker on mountain dew, two turtle doves,
and a beer in a tree. :)

My favorite holiday tradition is my mom’s dinner on Christmas Eve. Sometimes we have a house full, sometimes there are only 4 of us, but no matter the number of people we always have Chicken Cacciatore. It’s wonderful and warm and delicious, and I look forward to it for the next 364 days!

Ahh, cinnamon rolls!?! That sound delish. Our tradition is sort of similar. After we are done opening gifts, we always make a huge mess and make fried dough together. It is a more recent tradition (the past 3 years or so) but it is always so yummy to make your own fried dough and to just have fun and get messy.

I think I may do a gingerbread house this year. I haven’t done one in so long, but they are fun and smell so good. I’m sorry, I just love eating during the holidays, ha! It’s my favorite part ;)

By the way Robin, I love your blog design. I’ve been meaning to tell you that. It i s just lovely.

Every Christmas Eve my dad’s family goes to the children’s service at church then home to have dinner, then do stockings for everyone and then do presents. I am so excited this year because we finally have a kid again, Connor, in the family to bring back the spirit of Christmas!

So, a tradition we have started w/ our kids is that every year we get a new family ornament for the tree (personalized with all of our names) – that is different than all preceding ones. We also add a little picture frame ornament, with a new picture, for each kid and sometimes the twin sets and/or foursome. Our tree is now full of adorable pictures of the kids from the past years.

I love this time of year and have so many traditions from my childhood that I have carried on with my son, Owen. My favorite would be receiving an ornament each year from my parents. Even at 2, Owen loves getting his ornament and putting it on the tree. I look forward to sharing or starting more traditions as he gets older :)

The last 4 years we have had breakfast with Santa at the Carolina Inn. I thought maybe she would be outgrowing this but the enthusiasm for it is still there. We will be attending again this year on Christmas Eve.

Amy - December 7, 2011 - 9:19 am

Every Christmas morning Richard & the girls make home made sweet rolls. This has become a tradition on Christmas eve as well. Looking forward to the yummy sweet rolls & time with my family!

One of my favorite holiday traditions is when my mom takes walnuts, breaks them in half and fills them with tissue paper and coins then glues them back together. They go into our stocking and in the morning we have to use a nutcracker to open them up. Even though we are all grown, she still does this for us.

Lisa - December 7, 2011 - 9:11 am

I suppose this is a tradition…Ever since Mike and I were born, both his parents and my parents bought us an ornament for the tree each year! Even still both of our parents buy us a dated ornament, and we are now able to do the same with Cailyn! The Hallmark Keepsake ornaments are so cute; Cailyn LOVES the interactive ones! We may attempt a gingerbread house this year, but it may be too difficult with Cailyn! She may enjoy making a mess though! Hope you have a wonderful Christmas! :)

Laura Curtis - December 7, 2011 - 8:45 am

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!

Kate - December 7, 2011 - 8:43 am

Every year, my dad gave each of us kids our very own nutcracker. Each one was different, and often reflective of us & our personalities (i.e., Phantom of the Opera was my fave musical growing up, so I have a Phantom of the Opera nutcracker) The tradition continues until each of us gets married. I now I have 26 nutcrackers, all from my Daddy! It was always the first gift we opened, and we always looked forward to it! :-) Merry Christmas, Robin!

Kristen - December 7, 2011 - 8:36 am

Each year my parents give my sisters and I a new nutcracker for our collection that they started for us when we were younger.

There are so many holiday traditions that I treasure, especially since we’re an interfaith family. We put one dreidel ornament on the Christmas tree each night of Chanukah after lighting our menorah and that’s a neat one that I hope they remember as our way of mixing it up and honoring and celebrating both their parents’ faiths.

Jamie Moore - December 7, 2011 - 8:17 am

My favorite holiday tradition is getting to spend the day with my family…Christmas in the morning and my mom’s birthday party at night :)
