{Published} Grace + Alex, The Bride’s Book, Chapel Hill, NC

I totally love Grace and Alex.  And their wedding was really beautiful.  We had perfect weather, kind of moody skies which made for beautiful photos.  And their love for each other is just inspiring to watch.  I was so happy for them when their wedding was featured by The Bride’s Book.  It’s in the current issue right now, so definitely pick up a copy.  Grace + Alex, thank you so much again and I hope your new life (too far from me) is just as beautiful as you guys are!

{Daily Life} My husband….

My husband….

Fourteen years ago today, I married my husband.  This past weekend we celebrated being together 17 years.  We met at the end of our freshman year in college – I still remember they exact moment when I saw him.  He was coming down the stairs in a dorm and a bunch of us were going out to the movies.  The funny thing is that he was kind of dating a friend of mine at the time and I subsequently started kind of dating a friend of his (I say kind of because it was the whole long distance thing – it didn’t work out – good for me)!  I’m not going to bore you with the details…but the rest, as they say, is history.

My husband.

I’m not a big user of the whole “husband” “wife” “Mr.” “Mrs.” thing.  Most people know that when I talk about my husband, I refer to him as “Steve”.  But really, he’s the very best husband.

I could never ask for a better father to our girls.  Our girls love their daddy so much – we’ve gone through these various spells (as I’m sure any parent will tell  you) – where the girls have wanted nothing to do with me and only want to be with their daddy.  And I love that.  I love that he’ll drop everything and just be with them.  He gives them his whole heart and I can see it.   I love that he’s taught them to fly rockets, fly planes and give them opportunities that they will truly never understand how lucky they are.

My husband.

He loves and he gives.  I don’t honestly know if in 17 years he’s ever told me the word no.  And that doesn’t mean I get my way all the time.  But he tries to make things work…and he never, ever gives up.  He balances a lot between work, the girls, studying, he’s constantly doing something…he’s definitely not a “dust settle under his feet” kind of guy.  I love that he’s an all-in or all-out kind of guy.  He has an incredible work ethic and I love that about him.

My husband.

What I appreciate and love about him so much is that I’m the person I should be when I’m with him.  He’s so positive and so encouraging and well, just proud.  And god….I’m just lucky.  I get to be and do the things that I want, and he supports everything about me.  I’ve come up with some wacky ideas over time and not once did he tell me it was foolish or didn’t support it 100%.   He has been there for me through my very darkest moments and also seen me achieve great accomplishments.  He never once questioned the hundreds of migraines I’ve had over the years – he’s a very good man for standing with me through all of this as things got really bad.  And now, we are enjoying my “new life” so to speak…and he’s right by my side.

My husband.

I love thinking about my future with him.  I love knowing that as a team, we are incredibly strong and we can accomplish anything together.  I love thinking about the next 5, 10, 15, 20 years with him.  I know we give and take and it literally is the perfect combination.  I love thinking that some day, he’s going to walk 2 little girls down the aisle and dance with them at their weddings.

There is so much more I could say…but life gets in the way.
Thank you to my amazing husband…I know you’ll read this….so a dumpster still works for me ;)

{Bridal} Amanda, Mebane, NC

I was fortunate to document Amanda’s bridal on a recent Saturday.  All was well with the day and I started to head out when my husband called me and said a really big storm was moving in.  Confirmed by the very dark clouds, I pulled up intellicast.com and their current radar (note: I absolutely LOVE this site for checking current radar & weather).  Sure enough, giant storm about to move in and it was questionnable where it was in relation to where I was going.

I started driving and literally 10 minutes in I hit the worst weather I’ve had in a while.  It poured, thundered, the whole thing.  Traffic came to a stop on the freeway, it was bad.  I called Amanda and asked her what it was like by her and she said a huge storm had come through but it was fine now.  So I continued to what will be their amazing new property.  It turned out to be the perfect conditions, cloudy sky providing gorgeous light….couldn’t have asked for more.  And Amanda is so sweet, I can’t wait to be a part of their wedding in a few weeks!

{Wedding} Candice + Todd, Jones Chapel, Meredith College, Renaissance Hotel North Hills, Raleigh, NC

Ok, so this blog post is, how can we say, umm, a bit tardy.  I feel horrible about that but I know Candice & Todd already have all their wedding images (and have had them for a long time) so I think they’ll forgive me :)

Candice & Todd had the most beautiful wedding in February.  I know when I had their final meeting they were so worried about the weather and it turned out to be a gorgeous, sunny day.  They have beautiful families full of love, happiness and most of all, a LOT of laughs which made for a great day.  I can’t thank them enough!

Here’s the great group of people I was fortunate to work with as well that day:
Ceremony Site: Jones Chapel, Meredith College
Reception: Renaissance Hotel North Hills
Coordinator: Laci Banks, The Cherry Tree Events
Florist: Flowers on Broad Street
DJ: Anything Music
Favors: Sunset Slush

{Healing} Extraordinary Healers – CURE Media

Every time I work with CURE Media, I take something away from it.  This year’s project was definitely no different.  When I was contacted in late fall to work with them on their 3rd installment of their Extraordinary Healers book (my 2nd time working on their book), I immediately said I would.  The book is a documentary collection of photos and essays of cancer nurses and their patients.  These extraordinary nurses who are truly, the most amazing people you will ever meet, who give so much of themselves every day to their patients.  Patients who are so very sick…and they give, and give.

This year was particularly challenging because the patients were not well and in some cases has already passed before I had the chance to document them.  So it was especially emotional for me.  I remember leaving one of the nurses and just crying.  I can’t imagine how these nurses can give so much of themselves everyday knowing the odds their patients have.

So THANKYOU to these amazing women….you truly touched my life.  And as always, thank you CURE for doing what you do and allowing me to be a part of it.

A little piece of me…

I realize I haven’t blogged in a while, actually a VERY long time.  And that’s horrible of me.  I’ve had a whole lot of sessions and a wedding and I need to blog.  But right now, things are just….well hectic.  It’s funny, everyone always thinks the winter is “quiet” for photographers and this year seems crazier than ever for me.  I guess that’s a good thing.

So…I ask for patience and time.  I’m hoping within a week you’ll see some gorgeous new blog posts from me – I absolutely can’t wait to show you Candice & Todd’s wedding and everything else.

Much love,
xoxo

{Helping Out & Giving Back} Clicks for Quakes – Haiti Relief – Chapel Hill Portraits

{Little K} Family Session – Duke Gardens

I had the sweetest session on Saturday morning with the most adorable little two-year girl.  She quickly warmed up to me (lucky me) and we had the best time at Duke Gardens.  While it was a really overcast day, it gave us the most gorgeous light, it was an absolutely perfect morning for checking out all the gorgeous flowers (everything is very lush right now, especially with all the rain we’ve had).

Thank you again to a very wonderful family!

{Holly + Paul} Kiss Me – Duke Gardens/Chapel Hill Aqueduct Conference Center

I met Holly & Paul at Duke Gardens on Sunday afternoon for their Kiss Me (Engagement) session.  Their wedding is quickly coming up this November and it’s sure to be fantastic.  It’s going to be at the Chapel Hill Aqueduct Conference Center.  A new venue for me, so I’m super excited to be there to document their day.

Holly & Paul really love the outdoors and while we explored a lot of the “normal” parts of Duke Gardens, we actually ventured into new territory for me - parts of the gardens I’ve never even been to.  The gardens are just huge and given how much I’ve been there, I’m not surprised there are areas I’ve never seen.

Thanks again Holly & Paul, I can’t wait for your wedding!

{Little Hiatus}

So I’m kind of going on a break…well at least a blogging break…probably for about a month.  I have plenty to blog about, I took a trip last week and will be taking another one soon.  It’s the heat of the summer, lots going on both in the studio and my personal life and I’m just taking a little down time.  I’m not one of those people who takes down time but I actually read a book last week (and I LOVE to read), so it’s nice.

I’ve really focused this year on my schedule and my calendar and tried to balance the studio with my personal life and I have to say, it’s been pretty nice.  I even have a tan (and for those that know me know that I’m about as pasty and fair as it gets and right now I’m pretty dark).

So I appreciate everyone’s patience, know I’m totally working, just at a wee bit slower pace – still cranking away on albums, lots of great behind the scenes stuff and I’m excited about some roll out for this fall!

Thanks!!

{Just Because}

I was on UNC’s campus late last week for a maternity session (that will be blogged soon) and I saw this across the way.  I thought it was just a really nice moment so I grabbed it and wanted to share it.  I think it’s just sweet and nice.  I have no idea who these people are but I know they spent a lot of time around the Old Well taking informal graduation pictures.

{Charity Event}

I’m so incredibly pleased to announce the formation of Give Back for Hope.  A charity event I put together really under the premise of giving back and trying to do more.  I was incredibly inspired by the documentary cancer work I did last year and really felt the need to do more….so I am.  The site is www.givebackforhope.org and I would love as much support as possible.  Obviously this is very much a “village” effort.  Thank you very much!

{Our Thanksgiving} San Francisco

First, a huge thank you to everyone for their patience while I finally updated my blog (it is finally finished as of tonight (yay!)).  I have a few sessions this week and then it’s a lot of holiday orders for me, one more wedding to close out my year and then I’ll have a few “year in review” posts.  I’ve got some very cool ideas though for the January bridal show for those going.

So our Thanksgiving – this year we went to San Francisco.  A very (I mean very) last minute decision.  We had planned to go to NYC and do the very touristy things: the parade, Radio City music hall, etc.  But the weather was looking cruddy so we decided to cancel the entire trip and we started looking at alternatives (this was the Sunday before Thanksgiving).  We had been really wanting to go back to SF for a while, it’s just expensive when you have to buy 4 tickets.  Well we found an insanely cheap fair on Continental, so we booked it.  We still had to sell our Radio City tickets and fortunately we were able to make everything work out.

We arrived to pouring rain, but it wasn’t cold so that was good.  We went straight to In-N-Out Burger.  If you aren’t familiar or haven’t had it, oh so yummy!  Even the girls ate burgers (and they never do).  We then visited our old neighbors who have since moved back to the Bay Area and it was great seeing them for a while, after that, we ventured in to the city and to our hotel (we decided this time to stay in the city of SF instead of the peninsula or suburbs).

Thanksgiving morning we woke up and drove down to Monterey.  We hadn’t been to the aquarium in years and they’ve made major changes.  It’s truly amazing now and we could have easily spent the day there.
After a yummy lunch we headed up the coast, always a gorgeous drive and stopped at some of our favorite beaches.

Sadly, during Thanksgiving dinner, our adorable Sydney got really sick which is never fun when you are in a hotel, she was even running a high enough fever for us to call our doctor back here.  But on Friday morning, Steve decided to stay at the hotel with Sydney as she was still looking & feeling horrible and Madi and I went shopping in the city.  We didn’t have any crazy crowds at all, we just had a blast going to all our favorite stores.

Fortunately, by the time we got back, Sydney was doing a bit better so we decided to head down to Fisherman’s Wharf and let the girls see the sea lions, grab some lunch and get some souvenirs.  Afterwards we went over to the Golden Gate bridge (as what visit to San Francisco is complete without a visit to the bridge).  It was a super foggy day and the sun was just starting to peak through but I still really love the images I took that day.

Grab shot out of the car (while I’m driving)…just a few blocks from where I used to work…

And sadly, one of my last shots of the trip and one of my very favorites.  I really think I’m going to make this into a canvas.  I love everything about it.  Sadly, my heart is still in San Francisco again.  I loved everything about being there and it was difficult coming back.  While I know that this is home for us and this is the right place for us right now, San Francisco played such a huge part of my life for four years and really had a huge impact on the person I am today.

Organization & Closure

I’ve decided next week I need to close the office.  I’ll try to keep up with emails but I’m not going to do anything photography related (although all appointments will still happen and I’m happy to have consultations & final meetings with my current couples).  I’m hoping that everyone that is patiently waiting on work from me can understand the need for a break – I’ve had a very long summer and I’m ramping up for another 10 weddings between October 1-November 7.  I’m hoping to organize my closets, maybe get a massage, and take a few naps…

But something awesome I did today was get a dry erase board and write out the weddings that have work outstanding and everything it takes to get a wedding out the door from my side of things…it was a huge weight lifted off of my shoulders and I just have to share this! :)

Thanks everyone!  I really appreciate your support, understanding…and your goodness!
